ABSTRACT Ajeng Hermayuningsi, Fhina (2017). Improving Students’ Listening Skill by Using Collaborative Learning and Video in Mixed-Ability Class. Thesis. English Study Program. Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Jambi University in Academic Year 2017/2018. Advisors: (1) Indri Anastasia, S.S., M.A., M.Ed. (2) Drs. Saharudin, M.App.Sc, M.Ed, Ph.D. Keywords: Listening Skill, Collaborative Learning, Video, Mixed-Ability Class The aim of this classroom action research was to improve Listening skill of Grade VIII students of SMP N 11 Kota Jambi in the academic year of 2016/2017 through Collaborative Learning and Video in mixed-ability class.This action research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, implementing the action, observing, and reflecting the action. The instruments that were used in this research were observation checklist,field notes,interview protocol, and student’s listening document score. In collecting data, the researcher used theory of triangulation to gather all data from the instruments that had been used while having this action research. The research findings were described that students could improve their listening skill after applying the Collaborative Learningand Video as the media. The findings showed that Collaborative learning and Video improved student’s listening skill.It was indicated by the increase of the mean score in pre-test, progress test, and post-test. The students’ mean score in pre-test was 56.11. Whereas, in progress test and post-test was 63.75 and 72.5. Also, the collaborative learningand video gave a great improvement of student’s motivation and students were enthusiastic in the listening activity. The activity motivated them to learn. It is proved by checklist observation, field notes, and interview transcription.
