Abstract

This research is aimed at analyzing the Students’ Ability in Identifying Main Ideas and Topic Sentences in Second Semester of English Department at Jambi University in Academic Year 2016/2017. The population of this research were students of second semester in English Study Program at Jambi University. The cluster sampling technique was used in this research. The sample of this research were students who took reading for professional context class. To gain the data about finding main idea and topic sentence, a reading test was distributed and tested to the sample of the research. The research found that was fair categories in students’ ability in identifying main idea and their ability in identifying topic sentence in second semester of English Department at Jambi University in Academic Year 2016/2017. Based on the result of the test that the students’ comprehension level to identify main idea and topic sentence in second-semester was 65.7%. The percentage of students’ ability to identify main idea is good categories belonged to 78% and topic sentence is weak categories belonged to 55.7%. In conclusion, the students ability in identifying main idea and topic sentence was fair category. The research suggested students to realize that ability in identifying main idea and topic sentences is important.
