Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study was to explore the problems that students faced during an academic writing course, and to investigate the solving strategies that they used. It aimed at answering two questions: (1) What problems do English department students face in academic writing course? (2) What solving strategies do English department students use to solve the problems? The data were collected from respondents about their academic writing problems and strategies using questionnaires and interviews. Analyses of the data were done using quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results indicated that each respondent faced more than one problem in academic writing. The major problems or difficulties found are expressing other writer’s idea into their own words, organizing the text coherently, finding a relevant references for their writing, and using appropriate language, grammar and vocabulary. By those problems, respondents used more than one strategy that they think the most helpful. Those are editing, revising, proofreading, thinking (brainstorming) and planning (outlining). They also tried to get feedback by asking their friends, and tried to learn by internet. This study also revealed the factors that contribute the problems, and some suggestions for further lecturers and learners Key words: Academic Writing, Writing Problems, Strategies
