Abstract

Eusiderin A is a neolignan which was isolated as a major component from Eusideroxylon zwagery. The biological activity as antifeedant and antifungal were firstly reported by our research group. The purpose of this study was to investigate bromination of allylic chain in Eusiderin A for antimicrobial [Pyricularia oryzae (crop pests of rice) and Escherichia coli (cause diarrhea)]. The method for an allylic chain bromination was through the mechanism of electrophilic addition reaction between bromine and allylic chain, using bromine in a glacial acetic acid. The double bond breaks, and a bromine atom becomes attached to each carbon. The bromine lost its original red-brown color to give colorless liquid. In the case of the reaction with allylic chain, Eusiderin A dibromide was formed. The invitro antimicrobial activity test was performed by agar diffusion method. Eusiderin A dibromide showed good antimicrobial activity against Pyricularia oryzae and Escherichia coli.
