Abstract

ABSTRACT Aryadis Saudagar. Students’ Speaking Learning Strategies at One Public University in Jambi. Thesis. English Stud Program. Teacher Training and Education Faculty Of Jambi University in Academic Year 2017/2018. The first advisor is Dra. Armiwati, M.Hum The second advisor is Masbirorotni, S.Pd., M.Sc.Ed. Key words: EFL, Speaking Learning Strategies, Case Study. The aims of this study were to find out the speaking strategies that were used by English study program learners at one public university in Jambi. The data were collected by demographic background questionnaire and in-depth interviews with English study program students. The demographic data were analyzed descriptively, while the interviews were analyzed by within-case and cross-case analysis. Afterwards, the speaking strategies used by the learners were explained in each of strategies they are Imitative, Technical Means, Practicing Alone, Questioning Clarification, Communication, Self-Monitoring, Self-Evaluation and Repetition. There were the differences in strategies between each participants, Student 1 using seven strategies apart from Practicing Alone, student 2 using six strategies apart from Practicing alone and Questioning Clarification, student 3 using five strategies apart from Repetition, Practicing Alone, and Communication, student 4 using six strategies apart from Questioning Clarification and Self Evaluation, student 5 using four strategies apart from Repetition, practicing alone, communication, and self-evaluation, student 6 using all eight strategies. The implication of this research for speaking learning strategies are the students may get new knowledge and ways of teaching and the students may find new strategy to improve their language skills in language learning process.
