Abstract

LARASATI, MEISI P, 2019. Using Authentic Materials in Teaching English at SMP N 7 Muaro Jambi: Teacher Perception in EFL Classes. Thesis English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University in Academic Year 2018/2019. The first supervisor is Hidayati, S.Pd.,M.Pd. The second supervisor is Yanto, S.Pd., M.Ed. This research investigated the English teachers’perception toward the use of authentic materials in teaching English at Junior High School. It aimed to investigate why the English teachers use authententic materials in teaching English. This research employed a qualitative research approach in which its data were qualitatively collected through interview and observation process. This research was conducted at SMP N 07 Muaro Jambi, and three English teachers of the school were chosen as participants who participated in the process of collecting data via interview and classroom observation by taking field notes. The interview result show that the teacher were not clearly know about the authentic materials, however the participants said they use authentic materials in their class because using authentic make their student easy to understand the English lesson, for the criteria of authentic materials are based on themes, grade and students' abilities. The observation result show that all of the participant had used authentic materials in their teaching, two participants positively used authentic materials in their teaching, they were Teacher 1 and Teacher 2. teacher 1 always use Authentic materials in their teaching learning process, teacher 2 only use Authentic Materials twice. The types of authentic materials that Teacher 1 and 2 used were various. Teacher 1 used authentic visual and printed media. Teacher 2 used listening-viewing materials and also teacher 3 used printed materials, there were significant differences of students’ responses when the participants used authentic materials and when they did not use authentic materials in their classrooms. Students were more interested, motivated, and enthusiastic toward the teaching and the learning process when the participants used authentic materials in the classroom. Otherwise, when the participants did not use authentic materials in the students chatting and playing when the teacher explain about the materials in front of class, their students were less interested, motivated, and enthusiastic in learning English.
