Abstract
ABSTRACT This study is a sociolinguistics study which explores the relationship between language and society. The aim of this study is to find out sociolinguistics phenomenon called address terms performed by four characters in To Kill a Mockingbird. It contains two objectives. They are to identify the types, and social factors of address terms performed by the four characters in the novel. It is employed descriptive qualitative method since it described the phenomena of address terms in To Kill a Mockingbird. The findings were presented in description. It revealed two findings. First, there were eight types of address terms employed in this research. From the four characters employed all types of address terms in their utterances in the novel. The eight types were first name, title plus last name, title, last name, pet name, special nickname, kinship terms and mockery. Second, this research employed seven social factors that affect the four characters of the novel in using certain types of address terms. The seven social factors were particular occasion, rank of other, age, family relationship, occupational hierarchy, transactional status, and degree of intimacy.
