Abstract

Nowadays, news articles typically use several different modes in transferring meaning to readers. The articles use several modes are called multimodal texts. This study investigate the way of linguistic and visual features on the online news articles of The Jakarta Post in representing the information of the news through analyzing linguistic and visual representation used in the articles. Three online news articles with different topics were selected purposively from The Jakarta Post website. This study focuses on ideational aspect of both linguistic and visual features in those articles, examining both features based on the processes, participants as well as the circumstances that are involved to them. This way was used in order to reveal what the news articles talk about. Ideational metafunction of Systemic Functional Linguistic theory by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014) as well as representational metafunction from Kress and van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammar theory (2006) were employed as the theoritical frameworks of this study. The findings found that the linguistic and visual features of three news articles mostly represented Material Process and Symbolic Process, meaning most linguistic features contained the clauses which are expressing the process of physical action in delivering news information while visual features frequently showed the pictures displaying the process of identifying to main objects on the pictures by looking the things around them, in which the things have some symbolic values.
