Abstract
This research focused on the description of fricatives consonants pronounced by the students in pronouncing tongue twister. The objectives of this research were to analyze the pronunciation of fricatives consonant and to know the possible factors causing the students’ errors in pronouncing English sound. The data were collected by using test item and interview and the data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. The participants of this research were 9 students. They were taken from the third Semester Students of English Education Department of Jambi University in the Academic Year of 2019/2020. The research revealed that the participants made 18 deviations of all. The deviations are the substitution of /f/ with /p/ sound, the substitution of /v/ with /f/, /b/ sound , the substitution of / θ / with /t/, /th/, / Ø / sound the substitution of / ð / with / d /, /t/, / θ /sound , the substitution of / s / with / z / sound, the substitution of / z / with / s /, / Ø / sound , the substitution of / ʃ/ with / s /,/z/ sound, the substitution of /ʒ/ with /g/, / ʃ/, / s/ , and/ dʒ /. This research also found several factors causing students’ pronunciation difficulties reported by the participants; L1 interference, amount of language learning, phonological background knowledge, and motivation.
