Abstract
Indah Nur Azizah, 2020. The effect of Using Authentic Materials on 8th Grade to Increase Students’ Reading Comprehension Achievement at SMPN 4 Kota Jambi. A thesis of English Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Jambi University. First Supervisor, Mrs.Nunung Fajaryani, S.pd., M.pd and Mr. Yanto, S.Pd., M.Ed. The purpose of this research is to find out: significant effect from using authentic materials on 8th grade to increase students’reading comprehension achievement at SMPN 4 Kota Jambi. The design of this research used quasi experimental research. The control group was taught by using non authentic materials, while the experimental group was taught by using authentic materials. The population of this research is the eight grade students' of SMPN 4 Kota Jambi, This research took 36 students as the sample. 8b was as experimental group and 8c was as control group. The research instrument used was a reading test. Based on the data analysis, The results of this study indicate that the achievement of students 'reading comprehension in the experimental group is higher than the achievement of students' reading comprehension in the control group. That is evidenced by the average value of students in the experimental group for the pretest was 64.44 and posttest was 72.11. higher than the average value of students in the control group for the pretest was 57.30 and the posttest was 56.00. After calculated using paired sample t-test, in the experimental class the tcount is -4.296 and in the control class the tcount is 0.626. with df 35 at significant 5 / 2.5% = 2,030. Thus, it can be concluded that Ha (alternative hypothesis) from this study which states the use of authentic materials can significantly improve students' reading comprehension while accepted, H0 is rejected.
