Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate challenges and strategies in teaching English experienced by two English teachers at junior high school level in Tanjung Jabung Barat. It was also purposed to find out teachers strategies in overcoming the challenges. This study used a qualitative design with case study approached. Two participants at two junior high schools were selected in this research. The data obtained from interviews were analyzed. The study captured the English teachers’ point of view in English teaching challenges in the classroom and solutions they implemented to solve them through interview. The challenges emerged concerning students’ and concerning school facilities. Teachers’ challenged related to students’ lack of motivation, lack of discipline, low ability, difficult to concentrate, lack of vocabulary, and lack of parents support. In addition, facilities issue including inadequate resources and facilities, and time management. The solutions to overcome these challenges were also suggested in this study. The efforts done by the English teachers’ are applying various teaching methods and techniques. Methods and techniques are giving memorizing, group discussion, students’ enthusiastic and improving resources and facilities.
