Abstract
The purposes of this research were to identify the types of questioning used by an English teacher in English classroom interaction and to find out the reasons the teacher uses those types of questioning in English classroom interaction at SMA Purnama 2 Jambi. The method of the research was qualitative research method. The participant in this study is an English teacher of SMA Purnama 2 Jambi. To collect the required data for this study, observation and interview were used. The results of the study show that the total of questions are 68. The questions commonly was used by the teacher during the classroom observation were display and referential questions. Display question are the most frequent questions, which appear 43 times out of 68 questions or 63.23% of all the questions listed. After that, referential questions appear 25 times or 36.76 %. However, the reason why teacher used the types of the question is according to the function of the question type. The function of the questions were to get attract the student to be more active, to control the classroom and to see how far the students had mastered the lesson given. it can be conclude that teacher’s questioning strategies was effective method for English teacher in teaching and learning process.
