Abstract

This study aims to know what kind and most dominant reading strategies used by EFL students of English Study Program at Jambi University in comprehending textbook. This research is a quantitative approach that used survey design through questionnaire. The participant of this research was the fifth semester student of English study program at Jambi University Academic Year 2019/2020. The instrument of the research was adoopted from Mokhtari and Sheorey (2002). The questionnaire consisted of 3 categories that are global reading strategy, problem solving strategy, and support strategy. The finding showed that every student has different reading strategy in comprehending textbook. The analysis of the data based on participant’s responses is set in terms of frequency, percentage and mean. The result found that the most reading strategies used by EFL student is Problem Solving Strategy. The mean of this strategy is 3.89 (High), and percentage in this strategy is 77.8%. In addition, the second strategy is global reading strategies which score mean 3.76 with percentage 75.2% and the last strategies is support reading strategies which score mean 3.60 with percentage 72%.
