Abstract

Literacy is one of the most important foundations for success in school and life. Learning literacy begin from birth as known as early literacy. Early literacy is everything a child knows about reading and writing before he or she can read or write. One of a critical aspect in early literacy development is phonological awareness. To develop early literacy skill, especially phonological awareness, children need support from environment, such as family, school, etc. This paper focus on identify the role of school in supporting preschool children phonological awareness. Research with cross sectional design was conducted in August-September 2016 in one kindergarten in Jambi City, Jambi Province, Indonesia. Data were collected through observation in one class. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive analysis. Result showed that school support the children by providing learning materials, but the number and types of learning material was still limited. Teachers have supported the phonological awareness of children through playing and learning activities. However, the activities that has been given to children didn’t vary so not all of phonological awareness aspects got sufficient support.
