Abstract

This study focuses on the difficulties and strategies in comprehending English texts by the second semester students at English department of Universitas Jambi. The purposes of this study are to find out the causes of difficulties faced by the students and to describe the strategies that frequently used by the students in comprehending English texts. The method applied is descriptive quantitative where the instruments of this study are test and questionnaire. The test consists of 20 question items divided into five types of reading questions, they are topic and main idea, detail information, making inference, vocabulary and referring word. The questionnaire consists of 15 items for reading difficulties and 30 items for reading strategies. The result of the study reveals that the most difficult skill in reading test is finding topic and main idea (41.5%) and the easiest skill is checking the referring word (25.22%). The cause of each difficulty are lengthy sentences (3.06) for topic and main idea, lack of knowledge (3.16) for making inference, limited knowledge of word (2.98) for vocabulary, lengthy sentences (2.86) for detail information, and poor ability on memorizing (3.51) for checking referring word. The study also shows the students’ preference of using reading strategies with mean score; 3.71 for problem solving strategies, 3.51 for global strategies, and 3.38 for support strategies. It can be concluded that the students are generally in high and moderate awareness of all strategies.
