Abstract

ABSTRACT Delvia, 2017. The Effect of Using Guided Discovery Learning Approach toward Students’ ReadingComprehension at SMP N 1 Kota Jambi. English education program. Teacher Training and Education Facultyof Jambi University in Academic Year 2016/2017. The first supervisor isNunung Fajaryani S.Pd., M.Pd. and the second supervisor is Robi Soma S.Pd., M.Pd. Key Words: Guided Discovery Learning Approach, Reading Comprehension. This research was aim at finding out the effect of applying Discovery Learning Approach toward the eight graders’ reading comprehension at SMP N 1 Kota Jambi. Discovery Learning Approach was applied as teaching method to teach Reading Comprehension for the Junior High School Students. This Method was applied by dividing the students into group. This way was easier and more enjoyable for the students to increase their reading comprehension. This research is quasi experimental design. There were two classes namely, experimental and control classes, Discovery Learning Approach was applied in the experimental class, meanwhile, Grammar translation method was applied in the control class. There were seven meetings for each class. In which five meetings for teaching learning process and two meetings for pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was conducted in the first meeting and post-test was conducted in the last meeting. The result of this research showed that Guided Discovery Learning Approach affected significantly of students’ reading comprehension. The enhancement was proven by increasing students’ curiosity in reading texts. In addition, enhancement was proven by the increasing of students’ reading score after the treatment. The result of this research showed that the average score in the first meeting (pre-test) was69.25 and the average score of post-test result was94.64. the difference between pre-test and post-test was25.39. Hence in control class, the average score of pre-test result was65.57 and the average of post-test result was 80.02 with the difference between pre-test and post-test was 14.45. it means that, there was a significant effect of this research. So, it was indicated the method in this research was significantly increase on students’ reading comprehension.
