Abstract

ABSTRACT Dima, Muhammad Lutfi Brilian. 2020. English teacher perception on the implementation of higher order thinking skills at SMAN 3 Sungai Penuh. Thesis.English Education Study Program.Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University in Academic Year 2019/2020. The first supervisor is Drs. Marzul Hidayat, M.A., Ph.D. The second supervisor is Nely Arif, S.Pd.,M.Pd. Key words: Teacher perception, HOTS. The objective of the research is to explains English teacher perception on the implementation of HOTS at SMAN 3 Sunga Penuh. Related to the objective of the research, the research used qualitative research design. In collecting the data, the research used interview. The researcher used data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing for analyzing the data. The subjects of this research is 5 English Teacher at SMAN 3 Sungai Penuh. Then the findings of the research, All participants of this research had a good understanding of the concepts and definition of higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). Based on the interview data gathered by the researcher, the definitions of HOTS given by all the participants were related to the subskills of Bloom’s Taxonomy. It was also stated by a participant that HOTS requires students to think critically which is also related to the new revised edition of 2013 curriculum. All the participants of this research have implemented HOTS in English teaching and learning proccess. However,the implementation of HOTS at SMAN 3 Sungai Penuh so far has not effective yet due to some obstacles and problems faced by the teachers. The main obstacle faced by the teachers in the implementation of HOTS at SMAN 3 Sungai Penuh was students’ low ability in the basic concept of English. It was revealed in the interviews that all the teachers complained about this obstacle. The other obstacle was the teachers’ competence in designing HOTS question. The problem was limited supporting facilities such as internet access, learning media and learning sources, which are among important elements for effective implementation of HOTS.
