Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out the level of foreign language anxiety based on gender, to investigate the significant differences level of foreign language anxiety experienced by male and female students, and to identify dominant factors of foreign language anxiety that contribute on male and female students within speaking class. The data were collected by using questionnaire adapted from Balemir (2009). The data were analyzed with SPSS using descriptive statistic and independent sample t-test. The level of foreign language anxiety differs in term of gender. Male students (80.89) have a higher level of foreign language anxiety than female students (74.48) in speaking class. There was no significance differences level of foreign language anxiety between male and female students based on independent samples t-test. There were six factors causing foreign language anxiety, i.e. English classroom speaking anxiety, psychological anxiety, fear of oral test, competitive attitude in speaking class, social factor and teacher persuaded language anxiety. The dominant factors of foreign language anxiety that contribute on male (3.75) and female (3.83) students were English classroom speaking anxiety (29.2%). The next factor was fear of oral test (20.8%) and competitive attitude in speaking class (16.7%).
