Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the theme and the pattern of thematic progression in the threads “Dear David.” The researcher used the theory from Paltridge (2012) as the framework of analysis. There are three types of theme; they are topical, textual, and interpersonal theme. Also, there are three patterns of thematic progression, they are reiteration pattern, zig-zag pattern, and multiple/split pattern. The data of this research was Dear David's story threads. This story has twenty-two threads in total. The researcher took only five threads of them based on total engagement. The data was taken by copying the threads from the account of the story writer’s on Twitter. By using descriptive qualitative method in the textual analysis approach, the results show that the most used theme in Dear David’s story threads is a topical theme, followed by a textual theme and interpersonal theme. The thematic progression pattern that was found are reiteration pattern, zig-zag pattern, and multiple/split pattern. Keywords: Theme, Rheme, Thematic Progression, Twitter, Thread
