Abstract

Deforestation and forest degradation occurred have led to landuse and landcover changes. The landcover and landuse changes caused the transition ecosystems from secondary forest to agricultural systems within the study area. Biomass-based identification of the transition ecosystem were needed to avoid and to reduce deforestation and degradation. The study was aimed to determine dominant variables affecting the biomass classes over lowland forest transition ecosystem in Jambi Province. Biomass estimation model was derived from ALOS PALSAR data coupled with field inventory. Factors affecting biomass classes over transition ecosystem were human-induced and landcover index, and biophysical index. The proximity of biomass classes to the road and to village affected its condition and existence. Less accessible and more far from the road decreased the threat to biomass content. The closer to the village affected biomass as well. Classed biomass was affected by the first principal component (PC 1) where PC 1 was the index affected by human activity related to biomass condition in transition ecosystem. PC 2 showed the index of biophysical that strongly affecting biomass classes, mainly from slope and soil type of peat and non peat. PC 3 was the index of distance from river and slope that affecting biomass distribution of transition ecosystem.
