Abstract
Since the past two years, Oracy in Academic Context course has emerged replacing the last speaking and listening classes in English Department of Universitas Jambi in which the students are demanded not only to speak but also to listen as well as provide responses to native speech and spoken languages of others fluently and precisely. This study aims to describe the students’ problems in Oracy class and to investigate the possible causes of the problems. Interviews were conducted to 12 multi-achieved students. Results suggested that the speakers faced 11 problems which include lack of self-confidence, being afraid of making mistakes, inappropriate class schedule, unfriendly listeners, lack of vocabulary, lack of grammar, poor in pronunciation, difficult and uninteresting topic, direct feedback, difficulty to coordinate in group work, and improvised speaking material. Meanwhile, the listeners perceived 12 difficulties namely lack of adequate background knowledge, unfamiliar vocabularies, anxiety, poor in pronunciation, fast speech, long speech, accent, clarity of the sound, seat positioning, room temperature, lack of concentration, and unfriendly speaker. In conclusion, these problems are induced by a lot of factors which include the lack of linguistic competencies, cognitive competences, physical condition, and also social emotional which are in line with Mercer (2018) who has proposed these fundamental competencies categories in learning and teaching oracy.
