ABSTRACT Lia Sari Anggraini, The Use of Politeness Strategies in ‘Dead Poets Society’ Movie. A thesis. English Study Program. Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Jambi University. The first supervisor is Drs. Ahmad Ridha, M.A. The second supervisor is Dr. Reli Handayani, SS., M.Pd. Key words : face, utterance, politeness. People have to use polite language in communication in order to maintain relationship and create harmonious interaction with other member of society. In education, politeness is used to make the teaching and learning process goes smoothly. This research, therefore, aimed to explore how ‘Mr. Keating’ perform politeness strategies in teaching the students in Dead Poets Society movie, which was won Oscar award as the best movie that contains educational values. The performance of politeness strategies was studied under the umbrella of Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies (1987). The researcher used qualitative method in conducting the research. The researcher found there were four types of politeness strategies were realized by Mr. Keating in Dead Poets Society movie. They were Bald On Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off Record. The most frequently politeness strategy realized was Bald On Record strategy, therefore, it was the most effective strategy used by Mr. Keating to enhance learning. It is hoped this research will be an indispensable tool to examine politeness
