Abstract

Utami, Putri. 2020. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors and strategies experienced by third semester students in Jambi University. Many students in speaking English was still considered unsatisfactory. This study used quantitative design. The data was collected through field research by means of questionnaire. The participants were fifty-five students. The study captured students’ point of view in learning English. Students difficulties related to physiological and linguistic factors. The strategies to overcome these difficulties were also suggested in this study. The study reveals that from linguistic aspect, the statement which got the highest score was “I have difficulty conveying ideas fluently and orderly”, which average score (mean) is 3.69%. meanwhile, in physiological aspect, the highest score was in statement “I feel the level of understanding between me and my friends is different” which average score (mean) is 3.64%. There are few strategies used by the students. The strategies which used by the students to overcome the speaking difficulties divided into 3 strategies: cognitive strategies, meta-cognitive strategies and social strategies. In term of cognitive categories, the statement which got the highest score was “statement “I try to use English words with friends which average score (mean) is 3.92%, Then, in term of meta-cognitive categories, the statement which got the highest score was “I tried to analyze how to speak English” which average score (mean) is 4.00%, and in term of social categories, the statement with the highest score of all categories was “I ask my friends when I find it difficult” which average score (mean) is 4.16%. The researcher recommended for the students to understand and find out what are their difficulties in speaking English, so it will help them to find out the best solution to face this problem and helping them to improve their speaking.
