Abstract

This study is designed to explore experiences of alumni of Jambi University’s English Education Study Program in doing freelance works as translators. As an effort to educate prospective language entrepreneurs, which is one among its four graduate profiles, English Education Study Program currently expands its curriculum to include entrepreneurship-oriented translation courses. Actually, Translation course has been included in the curriculum since 2007, but without entrepreneurship focus. The findings of this study are expected to contribute actual information on how alumni engage in translation and interpreting works in freelance mode. This study was carried out as a descriptive-qualitative study. Data were collected by using in-depth interview with four participants. The interview’s questions were aimed to address main aspects of alumni’s experiences in doing freelance translating works, The findings demonstrate that participants similarly viewed the importance of language and linguistic skills in doing their translation works. They pointed out that most of difficulties they have faced in doing translation works are related to lingusitic matters. The participants mentioned about cultural knowledge, but not in details. Another important finding is that all four participants only engaged in translation and not interpreting, even though they see the promising prospects of interpreting works. This fact can be a consideration for future curriculum to make sure that training in translation and interpreting is distributed evenly.
