Abstract
Vocabulary has an important role in learning English because if students have rich vocabulary, they will easily master English. In this study, the researcher discovered problems faced by the VIII F grade students in learning new vocabulary. They had lack of vocabulary knowledge, difficulty in grasping and memorizing new vocabulary. The tedious learning process made students disinterested in studying English. The results of the examination scores analysis showed that the VIII F grade was the class that had the most remedial students among the other eighth grades. Therefore, the researcher used crossword with pictures as media to create a pleasant classroom atmosphere and give easiness to students in studying new vocabulary. The researcher used qualitative descriptive research as research method. For the subject, the researcher chose one teacher and 15 participants as representatives of 32 students in the VIII F class at SMP N 1 Kota Jambi. The researcher used teacher's diary and interview as her instruments. In analyzing the data, the researcher used thematic analysis. From the results of the research, the researcher found this media helped the teacher in creating an enjoyable learning situation. Students became interested, did not get bored easily, became more active and responsive during the earning process. This media helped students in learning new vocabulary. They got several improvements such as in their English scores, their ability to answer teacher questions, and gave easiness to them in grasping new vocabulary. They also faced difficulties in form of unsuitable media composition and lack of their vocabulary knowledge.
