Abstract

ABSTRACT Sulaeha, 2020. A Multimodal Discourse Analysis Towards Meme. FKIP. Jambi University. Under the supervision of Dra. Indri Anastasia, S.S., MA and Nyimas Triyana Safitri, S.Pd., M.Ed.St. Key Words: Meme, Multimodal Discourse Analysis, Verbal Humor. This research is aimed to see how multimodal discourse analysis take a part in delivering the meaning of the meme through caption and image. By combining captions and visual elements, it will make it easier for readers to understand the meaning of the meme that the meme maker wants to convey. This study uses qualitative approach and adopts description method as a design in presenting the data. The data consist of three screenshotted memes taken from the 9gag Instagram account by following purposive sampling method. The meme has an image and caption in it with a covid-19 theme based on what is currently happening as the criteria of the sampling method. In the finding section, the researcher analyzed all locutions in the form of captions contained in each of these memes. From each of the locutions, they all have illocutionary acts. The first meme in the form of a conversation in which there are several indirective illocutions. On the first and the second sentence classified as directives act, on the third sentence classified as expressive act, meanwhile the last sentence classified as representative act. In comparison to the second and third meme, the caption of these memes are not in the form of conversation but statements that can be classified as representative act. In addition, the researcher also concluded that there is a strong relationship between captions and images to make it easier for the reader to understand the meaning of the memes that the meme maker tries to convey to the reader.
