Abstract

This study aims to determine the diversity and abundance of species of butterflies (Lepidoptera; Rhopalocera) around campus Pinang Masak Jambi University. Samples were taken from 5 stations were determined purposively. At each station made transect along 140 m, then made 10 plots with a size of 5x5 m with the distance between the same plot (10 m). Parameters include the observation of diversity and abundance of species. In addition it also observed environmental conditions include the intensity of light, temperature and humidity. Based on the research, it was found 143 individuals from five families are families Papilionidae, Pieridae, Nymphalidae, Lycaenidae and Hesperiidae with species diversity index is 2.153. The results of calculation of the abundance of species show a lot of the kind found in low abundance of species with a value of 0.006 (one individual). The type of butterfly found abundantly is the type of value Junonia orithya with abundance of 0.160 (23 people), followed by Acraea terpsicore grades with abundance of 0.132 (19 individu) and Eurema hecabe with abundance of 0.118 (17 individu). Environmental conditions ie the light intensity (16780-92170 Lux), temperature (31.6 to 34.2 °C) and humidity (63.8 to 80.8%). From the research, the diversity of species of butterflies (Lepidoptera; Rhopalocera) around campus Pinang Masak Jambi University showed a moderate level with grades ranging between 1.5 to 3.5. It is suggested to do similar studies with larger locations, and with different seasonal conditions and achieve the results more widely.
