Dyah Tri Utami. 2021. Students’Perception toward The Use of Role Play for Speaking Ability. Thesis. English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University in Academic Year 2020/2021. The first supervisor is Robi Soma, S.Pd, M.Pd. The second supervisor is Dr. Mukhlash Abrar, S.S., M.Hum and the third supervisor is Tubagus Zam Zam Al Arif, S.Pd., M.Pd This research aims to know about how students' perception of the use of role play for speaking ability in class VIII of SMP N 17 Jambi City Academic Year 2019/2020. Respondents in this study were 85 students out of a total of 210 students. The method of this research is quantitative research instrument of this research is closed forms questionnaire. The data of this research was elicited by distributing questionnaires via Google form to students. Overall, the students' perceptions on the use of role play for speaking ability were good. The type of role play which used in this class was scripted role play and semi scripted role play. The role play implemented by asking the students to make a group to perform the play based on certain topics in which they had already prepared the script and property. From this research, it can be concluded all of the students had positive perceptions on the use of role play technique in speaking class. Role play was considered to bring positive contribution to help their speaking ability. Keywords: speaking, role play, students’ perception
