Abstract

ABSTRACT Siringo Ringo. M.W. 2021. An Analysis of Strategies Used in Translating Douglas Robinson’s “Becoming a Translator”. A Thesis. English Study Program. Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Jambi University in Academic Year 2021/2022. The first advisor is Delita Sartika, Ph.D. The second advisor is Urip Sulistyo S, Ph.D. Key Words: Translation, Translation Strategies This research is purposed to find out translation strategies used in the Indonesian translation of Douglas Robinson’s “Becoming a Translator”. The researcher was carried out by using descriptive qualitative method in order to reach the goal of this research. To collect the data, the researcher firstly read and compared the source text (ST) and target text (TT). The parts that demonstrated major differences between (ST) and the (TT) were identified as major changes, which indicated the implementation of particular translation strategies. Here the researcher uses the theory of Newmark (1988). There were 25 major changes taken as data, which were further classified into categories of translation strategies based on theories by Newmark (1988). The analysis of these data shows there are nine translation strategies used in the translation of Douglas Robinson’s “Becoming a Translator” into Indonesian. These strategies are synonymy, naturalization, paraphrase, notes, amplication, reduction, compensation analysis, transposition and modulation. Naturalization and transposition are the most frequently used strategy in which some parts of (ST) in (TT). Naturalization is a method of translating target cultural concepts embedded in (ST) by encoding them in their original target language forms. It is a domestication process which aims to minimize the strangeness of the foreign text to the target reader. Naturalization is often used by the other translator and it also showed the quality of the translation better. The use of this strategy is to maintain the equivalence of (TT). The target readers also easily understand the meaning of the translation. Transposition in translation is also one strategy that is always used, because if the translation is translated directly without paying attention to the structure the translation will be difficult to understand especially to Indonesian that had different grammatical structure with English. To conclude, in general the use of those nine translation strategies is oriented towards helping the target readers to understand (TT) easily. However, in doing this, the translator also took a risk in omitting crucial knowledge, such as the importance of research ethics that the Indonesian readers may possibly need if they plan to take part in internationally-reputable research.
