Abstract
Chairil Anwar’s poem “Aku” was a highly appreciated work, which has been analyzed by a number of literary critics and researchers. These studies highlighted the elements, historical value, lexical choice and the structures of the poem. These rich dimensions of the poem pose possible challenges in the translation process. Within this context, this study investigated translation strategy and translation shift in the English translation of “Aku”. This study was carried out using descriptive qualitative approach. The results of translation analysis were classified into some categories of translation strategy proposed by Lefevere and translation shift which was proposed by Catford. From the total of twelve translation strategies, blank verse translation and interpretation were strategies most-frequently used by Burton Raffel as a translator. As for translation shifts, there were four structure shifts, three intra-system shifts, and two class and unit shifts. Also, the use of translation strategy and translation shift leads to a domesticating approach in the translation of the poem “Aku” by Burton Raffel due to Burton Raffel’s failure on chosing the equivalence word as the translation of the original line, in example are “sedu sedan” and “pedih peri”.
