Abstract

The two common methods of audiovisual translation (AVT) are subtitles and dubbing. Whether it is written or a visual text, every sort of translation form has its own strategy. The choice of the appropriate subtitling strategy is an important thing for the translator to make a understandable translation. Slang is one of language variety that has unique characteristics and sometime a translator face a hard situation when translating slang words. This is where the use of a subtitling strategy is to make it easier to translate words that are basically only understood by a particular group. This study is aimed at knowing the type of British slang expressions, the application of subtitling strategies, and the types of meaning equivalence found in British TV series Peaky Blinders Season 1. The research used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data of this research are slang words found in British TV series Peaky Blinders Season 1. The data were categorized based on three theories. The first theory was type of slang proposed by Matiello (2008), the second theory was subtitling strategies proposed by Gottlieb (1992), and the third theory was type of meaning equivalence proposed by Nida (2001). The results of this study revealed that 35 data belong to specific slang out of 89 data, and 54 data belong to general slang. In translating the slang words, the translator implemented eight strategies from ten subtitling strategies. The most frequently applied strategy is transfer with total of 58 data. There are 60 data belong to formal equivalence, and 29 data belong to dynamic equivalence.
