Abstract

From observations and brief interviews with several second semester students of the English Language Study Program at Jambi University, there were some obstacles in listening. As English learners, they seem to have difficulty understanding native English speakers. They find it difficult to grasp the full meaning of native speakers' high-speed listening material from listening to what they have learned. When listening they don't focus on the speech that is spoken too fast, sometimes they also did not understand the meaning of what the native speakers they are listening to are saying. The purpose of this study was to see the learning strategies applied by the second semester students of the English Study Program in the academic objective courses at Jambi University. In this research, it was conducted by giving questionnaires to respondents and conducting interviews with these respondents. The method used in this research is mixed methods, namely research methods that combine quantitative methods and qualitative methods. The research was conducted by giving questionnaires to respondents via google form after giving the questionnaire and then interviewing researchers. The sampling technique in this study was random sampling which was carried out randomly without considering the strata in the population. The object of this research is the second semester student of the Jambi University English Study Program which is connected to 5 classes. Then 75 respondents from 5 classes were taken, then the highest respondent in each class with a total of 10 respondents for the researcher interview. The findings in this study found that students majoring in English used several tricks to improve their listening in an interesting way. They use their habits to improve listening skills such as; listening to songs, watching English movies, listening to TOEFL materials, English news and English conversations. In addition, the strategies they use in the listening comprehension section to solve some of their listening problems are; top-down strategy, social strategy, and affective strategy. From the interview section, in the top-down strategy the researcher found that the participants were still focused on listening material. they have that background information. They do this to double-check the information they have. Based on the results of the research conducted by the researcher, it can be concluded that all students of the second semester of the Jambi University English study program have a learning strategy in their own way and in a unique way and can be a reference for other students.
