Abstract
Vocabulary is a building block of a language and no language acquisition can occur without mastering vocabulary (Nie & Zhou, 2017). The more students acquire and master vocabulary, the more they can speak, write, read, and listen to the target language. Every teacher is likely to have various strategies to help students increase their vocabulary (Schmitt, 2000). This research aims to investigate the strategies and the dominant strategies used by English teachers to increase students’ vocabulary in learning English. The population of this research was the English teacher who incorporated in MGMP rayon 4 Kota Jambi. The total number of teachers who are actively involved in the association was 39 teachers, yet there are only 22 teachers participated in this study. The approach and design used in this research were quantitative research with survey research design. The questionnaire adopted from Yu-ling (2005) was the main instrument to investigate English teachers’ strategies. The items of the questionnaire consisted of 28 statements that were grouped into three types of strategies; memory strategies, cognitive strategies, and consolidation strategies. After the data was collected from the participants, the data was analyzed by using simple descriptive statistics. The overall results indicated that the English teachers used all three strategies; cognitive strategies (3.99), memory strategies (3.82), and determination strategies (3.61) to increase students' vocabulary. Then, the dominant strategies used by the English teachers to increase students’ vocabulary were cognitive strategy including repetition and using mechanical means to help students increase their vocabulary.
