ABSTRACT Alya. Sarah. 2021. An Analysis of Figurative Language Translation of Lisa See’s Novel Entitled Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Thesis, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University. First supervisor: Delita Sartika S.S., MA., Ph.D. and second supervisor: Dr. Yanto, S.Pd., M.Pd. Keywords: analysis, figurative language, translation procedure, translation method Figurative language gives an interesting way to deliver the message to the reader. But, for the translator, translating figurative language is a challenging process. If figurative language poorly translated, it may cause misinterpretation because figurative language has the implicit meaning. In translating figurative language, translator may apply some translation procedures and translation method. The aim of this work is to find out what are figurative language used in the novel and what translation procedures and method used by the translator. The translation procedure and method used in this research is translation procedure proposed by Newmark (1988). This research used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the problem. The collected data are taken from twelve chapters of the novel. The results showed that 39 figurative languages were found with the total number of simile are 19 sentences, metaphor are 11 sentences, personification are 3 sentences, allegory is 1, symbol are 1 sentences, and hyperbole with 4 sentences. For the translation procedure, equivalence, synonymy, reduction, expansion, and paraphrase are applied by the translator with the most dominant procedure used is equivalence. For Translation method there are literal translation and semantic translation applied by the translator is various based on its sentences and depended on translator herself.
