Abstract

Nanoparticles Fe3O4 (Magnetite) have been successfully synthesized using the coprecipitation method with the addition of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG-4000) as a coating. The distribution of crystal size, particle size and functional groups of these nanoparticles was examined based on the mass ratio of PEG and Fe3O4, that is 1: 3, 1: 2, 1: 1, 2: 1, and 3: 1. Then characterized by FTIR to be able to analyze the functional groups of all samples. To determine the crystal structure and crystal size in the synthesized samples were characterized by XRD only in pure Fe3O4, 1: 3 and 3: 1 samples, while the morphology and particle size were characterized by SEM only in 1: 1 samples. Based on the FTIR spectrum, it was obtained that all samples appeared a typical Fe3O4 functional group, that is Fe-O at the absorption peak of around 544 - 673 cm-1. After the encapsulation process was carried out, the C-C functional groups appeared in the 1: 3, 1: 2, 1: 1 encapsulation samples. In 2: 1, 3: 1 samples, asymmetric C-H, H-C-H, C-O-C, and C-O vibrational bonds appear, which are types of constituent bonds in PEG polymers. The results of the calculation of the XRD diffraction showed that the crystal size of the sample decreased respectively, that is16.70 nm, 16.68 nm, 13.87 nm. The results of SEM characterization in 1: 1 sample had clear particle morphology and not too much clumping, and had a particle size of 31-156 nm.
