Abstract

Spermatozoa from epididymis of dead animals is a beneficial option for preserving male gametes. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of epididymis preservation at 5 oC on the quality of Bali cattle spermatozoa. Twenty epididymis of Bali cattle was stored in the refrigerator at 5 oC, allotted into four different storage time: control, 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h. The variables measured were motility, viability, and abnormality of spermatozoa. The results showed that storage period lowered (P<0.05) motility but had no significant effect (P>0.05) on viability and abnormality of spermatozoa. Motility was decreased in 48 h (62.23%) and 72 h (59.46%) compared to control (70.36%), whereas 24 h (67.74%) was similar to control. In conclusion, epididymis storage at 5 oC for up to 72 h maintain the quality of Bali cattle spermatozoa that still suitable for insemination use.
