Abstract

Soil water availability on dry land Ultisol is one of the important factors to increase the peanut yield of food crops such as peanuts. One effort that has been done is the adding of china violet that often disturbing in oil palm and rubber plantations. This study aimed to examine the effect of china violet on water availability of Ultisol and its effect on peanut yield and to identify the appropriate dose of china violet to increase the the availability of soil water and peanut yield. The experiment was conducted at the experimental station of the Faculty of Agriculture, Iniversity of Jambi. The treatments were arranged in a rondomly blocked design consisting of 5 treatments giving of china violet (0 ton ha-1, 5 Mg ha-1 , 10 Mg ha-1 , 15 Mg ha-1 , and 20 Mg ha-1). Observed variables including soil organic matter content, soil bulk density, soil total porosity, rapid drainage pore, avaiable water pore, field water content, and dry weight of peanut pods. The results of study showed that the application of china violet improve the soil water availability 33-66 % and peanut yield 88-248 %. The highest increase in peanut yield was achieved by application of 10 Mg ha-1 compost.
