Abstract
Ultisol is an acid mineral soil that has low productivity with low soil organic matter, nutrients, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and high relatively Al content. Improvement of soil chemical properties is highly needed to enhance crop productivity, especially soybean. One of organic fertilizers that can be potentially used to increase Ultisol productivity is compost of empty fresh fruit bunch. This organic fertilizer is derived from composting of empty fruit bunch with palm oil mill effluent which has a low C/N value less than 20. Organic fertilizer applied to soil will undergo decomposition process slowly and release nutrients such as N, P and K and other macro and micro nutrients. Because of low decomposition process of organic fertilizer, compost applied at first planting is still being able to be used for the next crop. This research was aimed to study the effect of residue of compost of empty fruit bunch on the improvement of soil chemical properties of Ultisol and soybean yield. The experiment was carried out from May to November 2011 at the Experimental Field of Agriculture Faculty, University of Jambi, Mendalo Darat, Muaro Jambi Regency. The treatments were arranged in a randomly block design with four replications. The treatments consisted of control with addition of 50 kg ha-1 urea, 150 kg ha-1 SP-36, 75 kg ha-1 KCl, and residue of compost application of first planting (5 ton ha-1, 10 ton ha-1, 15 ton ha-1 and 20 ton ha-1). The results of the experiment showed that residue of compost could improve soil chemical properties with increasing pH, organic C, available P and exchangeable K and decreasing exchangeable Al. Dry weight of soybean seed was also increased to 0,751 ton ha-1 with compost residue of 20 ton ha-1, which was lower than that of first planting achieving 2, 04 ton ha-1.
