Abstract
Lestari, T. D. 2021. Students’ Perspectives in Studying English Using Google Classroom and WhatsApp Applications as Learning Tools in Covid-19 Pandemic in SMP Negeri 2 Kota Jambi. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University in Academic Year 2020/2021.The First Supervisor is Eddy Haryanto, Ph.D. Second Supervisor is Dr.Mukhlas Abrar, S.S., M.Hum Key words: Perspective, Google Classroom, WhatsApp, Covid-19, Pandemic, Online Learning, Application This research is a qualitative research with a case study approach. It focuses on collecting data about the students’ perspectives in studying English using the Google Classroom and WhatsApp Applications as learning tools in Covid-19 pandemic in SMP Negeri 2 Kota Jambi. In collecting the data, the researcher used interview that consisted of some questions made by herself based on what have been discussed in Chapter II. The researcher chose 10 students (5 males and 5 females) from the class 8E as the participants in this research. This research has one theme and two sub-themes. The theme is “studying English using Google Classroom and WhatsApp Applications and the sub-themes are “positive” and “negative”. The data of this research showed that the Students’ Perspectives in Studying English of using Google Classroom and WhatsApp applications as Learning Tools during in COVID-19 Pandemic at SMP Negeri 2 Kota Jambi is showing a negative response. In this research all the participants do not agree with studying using the Google Classroom and WhatsApp application since they are not familiar with the application for the learning process. In addition, the participants also stated some difficulties using the applications. It starts from the problem of connectivity, where mostly the signal at their home is not easy to find/get. Then, the other obstacles such as, have to share phone with the siblings that also do the same learning process, the small phone memory capacity, the boring feeling since all the lesson will do in same system online.
