Abstract

ABSTRACT Pasaribu. R.T. 2021. Exploring Teachers’ Perspective in Using English as Medium of Instruction In Teaching Mathematics: A Case Study of Private Tutorial. A Thesis. English Study Program.of Pascasarjana Jambi University in Academic Year 2021/2022. The first advisor is Eddy Haryanto, S.Pd., M.Sc.Ed. M.PP., Ph.D The second advisor is Dr.Mukhlas Abrar, SS., M.Hum. Key Words: English as a Medium of Instruction, Teaching Math in English This research was purposed to explore the teacher’s perspective in teaching math through English and described the teacher’ difficulties faced by the teacher in teaching math through English. The researcher was carried out by using qualitative method in order to reach the goal of this research. The researcher needed an instrument to support the process of collecting data. In this research, the researcher used interview protocol as the research instrument. The researcher asked some questions related to teachers perception and problem in using English as medium instruction in teaching mathematics to the participants. The researcher analysed the data that was collected by using Miles and Huberman data analysis model. There were some activities in this analysis technique; they were data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. After collecting the data, the researcher did data reduction by making a main summary, choosing the main points, and deleting useless ones said Sugiono (2007). By data reduction the data that was finished from reduction gave clearer description and made easier for the researcher to collect the further data. Reduction steps in this research were as follows: Resuming the result of interview and documentation. Classifying the results of interview that suitable with the research needs. It meant that the data which un-useful could be reduced. Changing the result of interview and documentation to be good language, and then it was transformed into the note. Displaying the data. In the qualitative research, the data could be displayed in form of brief description. Miles and Huberman stated in Sugiyono, data display helped us to understand what was happening and to did something-further analysis or caution on that understanding. By data display, then the data was organized, arranged in a pattern of relationships that would be easily understood.
