Abstract

This research was aimed to develop an English speaking module for seventh-grade students of Junior High School. It found that the speaking materials provide in the student's textbook were not enough for classroom use. This research was conducted based on educational Research and Development (R & D) by applying the three stages of educational research and development of the ADDIE model by Branch, 2009. They consisted: 1) Analysis, 2) Design, 3) Development, 4) Implement, 5) Evaluation. This research has limited to three stages, they are Analysis, Design, and Development. The subject of this research was 38 students and The English teacher of SMP Negeri 1 Merangin. The data was taken from interviewing the English teacher and distributing questionnaires for 38 students. Based on the need analysis of students, the result shows that most of the students have some problems in speaking skills, they were not confident to speak English because they did not understand the meaning of words or vocabulary. They also feel difficulty in the pronunciation of words or vocabulary. They need an additional English speaking book that contains interesting material, variation of speaking activity, and some information of the list of vocabulary and the way to pronounce the words or vocabulary. Thus, developing material was based on students' needs. The speaking module was developed into 10 lessons. The products have been validated by an expert, namely an English lecturer in Universitas Jambi. The result shows that speaking modules are suitable, relevant, and attractive for the seventh-grade students of Junior High School.
