Abstract
ABSTRACT To respond to the current issues on the declining of English teaching quality in the school context in Indonesia, this study explores and examines the teachers’ English teaching competence of knowledge-based teaching particularly at the secondary school level. To discover this, it is needed a systematical continuum review or evaluation of the essential issues on how the English Study Program provides and develops Knowledge-Based for Teaching to refine and improve EFL teacher candidates’ pedagogical skills and competencies. How EFL teacher candidates learn and develop, what are potential problems in its implementation and how The English Study Program responds to these problems for quality assurance are also involved in the tracking details of this study. To this end, a semi-structured interview was applied to nine EFL teacher candidates and two English lecturers. The finding revealed 4 main points underlined as a mitigation effort by the English Study Program such as (1) providing three language fields on curriculum: Knowledge of language, Knowledge about language, and Knowledge about how to teach language. (2) Integrating the knowledge of the language and pedagogical science. (3) Reconstructing curriculum to accommodate hybrid system as an alternative mechanism for the graduate profile. (4) Treasuring study from alumni input as a baseline for faculty improvement. Another finding also revealed that EFL teacher candidates are still experienced with the existence of technology advancement and got limited learning resources. They also have long-term experienced in heterogeneous classes where students are in English diverse competence. Students with different aspirations (learning the language vs aspiring to be teachers of that language) also became an unsolved issue. So, it is recommended to appraise through academic research for further implication on English teaching in Indonesia for the purpose of upgrading and reinforcing the skills of teachers’ Knowledge-Based Teaching for better teaching quality. Key Words: Knowledge-based teaching, English teaching and Teachers’ pedagogical skills and competences
