Abstract
This research aimed to investigate the correlation between local folklore through narrative text and students’ vocabulary mastery. It was designed by descriptive statistic. A test was used in collecting the data. Non-random sampling design with purposing sampling consideration was used to find the sample in SMP Negeri 7 Muaro Jambi. The result of the test section was the quantitative data. Based on the findings, the mean score of the students’ reading comprehension through local folklore of narrative text was 68.88, it means that the mean of the score reading comprehension through local folklore of narrative text was good level. The mean score of the students’ vocabulary mastery was 67.96, which means that the mean of the score the students’ vocabulary mastery was good. The result of data by using SPSS show that the correlation coefficient between the two variables (local folklore through narrative text and students’ vocabulary mastery) was 0.804, while the critical value for 27 samples and confidence was 0.380 Since the coefficient correlation obtained (0.804) is higher than the table value (0.380), it means that there was a significant positive correlation between the two variables and correlation is considered to substantial. In conclusion, to have good reading comprehension through local folklore of narrative, students should have a good mastery of vocabulary.
