Abstract

Background: ARI is the main cause of morbidity and mortality of infectious diseases in the world. This study aims to identify the relationship between the determinants of the characteristics and socioeconomic of children under five on the incidence of ARI in children under five in Puskesmas Tanjung Agung, Bungo District in 2021. Method: This quantitative study used a cross-sectional design with an analytical survey method. The population was all children under five in the coverage areas of Puskesmas Tanjung Agung. It involved 90 children under five as samples selected using the purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using questionnaires. The univariate and bivariate analysis of the data used a chi-square test. Results: The results of the univariate analysis showed the proportion of ARI (54.4%), boys (46.7%), girls (53.3%), exclusive breastfeeding (44.4%), LBW (44, 4%), mothers with a higher education level (36.7%), mothers with a low education level (63.3%), and ownership of health insurance (47.8%). The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between gender and the incidence of ARI (p= 0.049, PR: 2.57 95% CI 1.090-6.067), between exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of ARI (p= 0.000, PR: 5.34 95% CI 2.161-13.201), and between LBW and the incidence of ARI (p= 0.015, PR: 3.22 95% CI 1.338-7.761). However, there was no relationship between maternal education levels and the incidence of ARI (p= 0.519, PR: 1.416 95% CI 0.617-3.458) and no relationship between ownership of health insurance and the incidence of ARI (p= 0.376, PR: 0.0627 95% CI 0.271-1.447). Conclusion: The related variables are gender, exclusive breastfeeding, and LBW, while the unrelated variables are maternal education levels and ownership of health insurance.
