Abstract

The purposes of this study were to explore strategies used, challenges faced, and strategies to cope with the challenges used by English teaches in implementing online learning during the covid-19 pandemic. It was a qualitative research with a case study approach through interviews. The participants of this research were 2 English teachers of a Senior High School in Tanjung Jabung Timur. The data in this research were obtained through 3 sections of interviews with ten questions in total. The finding showed that strategies used by English teachers in implementing online learning during the covid-19 pandemic were diagnostic assessment and discovery learning by using several applications included WhatsApp, Google Classroom, YouTube, Google Form, and Google search engine. The teachers used some other strategies involving peer tutors, using the school's facilities, implementing asynchronous online learning, and parents counseling to cope with challenges. Meanwhile, their challenges were lack of access to technology, parents' support, social influences, and students' interest. Because of that, it is suggested to the teacher to keep using or apply the strategies combinations they have implemented. Additionally, since there were also some strategies discussed in this research, the reader of this research, especially the teacher, can also use other strategies and technologies to increase their variety of learning activities. Lastly, during the observation of discovery learning implementations, the teachers used it for recount text material with combination of writing and speaking projects. It has potential to be used differently in different material and skills focus. So, it is also suggested to further researcher to be specific with certain aspect of English teaching such as language skills or certain material to enrich the data related to the field.
