Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of critical thinking skills in online English learning activities as well as the factors affecting English teachers of SMA Kristen Bina Kasih in Jambi during the COVID-19 pandemic. This qualitative research was conducted based on data from observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the framework of qualitative analysis by Miles & Huberman (1994); which are data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. Based on the research results, the characteristics and teacher’s awareness of the critical thinking skills prove that critical thinking skills are implemented in the online learning activities, which shown from the various kinds of activities that teacher applied in the online learning activities. The teacher's factors when applying critical thinking skills are divided into three; Teacher factors, Students factors, and Supporting factors. Moreover, the challenges faced by the teacher are divided into two; Internal Challenges and External Challenges. The results of this study suggest that the teacher education study program, especially the English language study program, needs to start integrating learning that focuses on the application of critical thinking skills in the practice of technology-based teaching activities, as a form of preparation for future teacher candidates. The Ministry of Education and Culture and SMA Kristen Bina Kasih also need to consider giving training and workshops for teachers and students about various activities that apply critical thinking skills using e-learning platforms and the development of online learning techniques using low-resource technology. Furthermore, the researcher suggests further research to explore critical thinking skills in online learning activities.
