Abstract
Peat soil is soil formed from the rest of plant tissue naturally, at various levels of decomposition of organic matter. The impact of construction and condition of drainage channels on peat land at PT Batanghari Sawit Lestari can change the characteristics and physical properties of peat soil. This study aims to determine the differences in the characteristics and physical properties of peat soils in oil palm plantations due to differences in drainage conditions at PT Batanghari Sawit Lestari. The method used is the Transect Method with a distance of 300 m at each point in order to obtain 14 sample points for observing the characteristics and physical properties of peat soil, as a point of installation of water level monitoring wells on peatlands, as well as a place for soil sampling for analysis in the laboratory. The results showed that in the condition of the well-maintained drainage channel, the sapric maturity level was >0.2 g/cm3, C-organic <48, 20%, and specific gravity was 1.50. The water content and total pore space will be smaller if the peat maturity level is getting more mature, it can be seen at water content <276.78% and total pore space <81,13%. While in the condition of the drainage channel that is not maintained, the maturity level of the surface layer (0-60 cm) is hemic and fibric, the volume weight is < 2 g/cm3, C-organic > 48.20%, and has a specific gravity based on the maturity level of 1, 40 and 1.30. The water content and total pore space of peat soil, the more raw the decomposition rate, the greater the value of water content > 304.81% and total pore space of peat soil > 81%. The use of peatlands for plantations must maintain peat conservation methods so as not to damage the physical characteristics and properties of peat soils and peat ecosystems.
