Abstract

This study examined the students’ informal writing activity trough fanfiction in its relation to improving their writing skill. It aims to investigate how far this non-formal writing activity improves the students’ writing skill especially in grammar and vocabulary aspects. Involving seven respondents selected purposively from Twitter users, trough questionnaire and online interview, it is found that all participants agreed that fanfiction is beneficial as a media to exercise students’ writing skill autodidactically outside of school. Although it is not the only learning source for them, every respondent of this study approved that writing fanfiction is an activity which allowed them to practice their writing and help them enhance their grammar and vocabularies while doing something that they like. From the data gathered, it is recommended that students should be encouraged to actively expose themselves in any kind of informal writing activity or exercise to improve their writing skill.
