Abstract
This research aimed to describe politeness strategies used by the students of English study program at Jambi University in online discussions. The researcher used qualitative methods especially ethnolinguistics because of its adaptability and flexibility with the data. The data of the research were students’ utterances and were taken from the students’ Whatsapp chat history from Literature for Educational Purposes and Teaching English for Young Learners subject using documentation method. The data were analyzed under the theory of politeness from Brown and Levinson (1987). In analyzing the data, the researcher used interactive model of data analysis from Miles et al. (2014). The data analysis includes condensing, reducing, and displaying and verifying the data. The researcher found that the four politeness strategies were manifested: There were positive politeness, negative politeness, bald on record, and off record.
