Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the taboo words contained in a self-help book “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck”. This research applied a descriptive qualitative method. The data were classified using Battistella’s (2005) theory of taboo words and the translation strategies are analyzed with a theory from Baker (2018). All data gathered from the book were identified and grouped into four taboo words categories which are epithets, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity. The researcher then matched the data with Baker's nine translation strategies after categorizing them. There are 28 data found by the researcher in The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck book. It is found that epithets occurs 2 times followed by profanity which also occurs 2 times, vulgarity 20 times, and obscenity 4 times. The analysis of translation strategies shows that the translator only applied six out of nine translation strategies. The result shows that translation by a more neutral/less expression word is the most strategy used with 10 times appearance, followed by translation by a more general word 4, translation by paraphrase using unrelated words 6 times, translation by omission 4 times, translation by paraphrase using related words 2 times, and translation using an idiom/expression of similar meaning and form 2 times.
